Few places capture California’s quiet magic like the Palos Verdes cliffs at sunset. It’s one of my favorite places for engagement sessions: a stretch of rugged coastline where golden light meets the ocean and every direction feels cinematic.

Defausha and Kamau’s cliffside session was on a perfect Palos Verdes afternoon, with calm winds and a clear sunset. My biggest tip for couples planning sessions by the ocean is to schedule it to end around sunset—the light shifts quickly, and that final fifteen minutes and the moments just after have the most beautiful light of the day.
For sessions at the Palos Verdes cliffs and coastline, I always recommend wearing comfortable shoes (or at least bringing comfortable shoes to change into) because there’s a bit of up and downhill walking along a trail and the terrain is rocky.

Some of my favorite spots include the Bluff Cove Trail, RAT Beach, and the Malaga Cove downtown area. Each offers a slightly different look, some with rocky ocean views and some with sandy beaches. The cliffs in particular are iconic and gorgeous, especially at sunset.
What should we wear for a Palos Verdes engagement session?
Neutral or coastal-inspired colors photograph beautifully against cliffs and an ocean backdrop—think beiges, soft blues, whites, and terracotta. I usually suggest avoiding bold patterns and high heels, because most sessions here involve walking on uneven terrain (though if heels are the look, you could always carry them and switch shoes before taking photos). Flowing fabrics also look amazing in the coastal breeze.
Can we bring our dog to our engagement session in Palos Verdes?
Absolutely! Most trails in Palos Verdes are dog-friendly if your furry friend is on a leash. If you’re planning to bring your dog, I’d recommend bringing a friend or family member to help out between shots.
